The Japan Society for Respiratory Care and Rehabilitation is a society that was transformed on July 2nd, 2012 in such a way as to take over the Japan Society for Respiratory Care and Rehabilitation before it became a general incorporated association.
The origin of this society lies in the Respiratory Care Study Group, which was established in 1980 as a place to exchange information on basic and clinical research results regarding respiratory care for patients with acute and chronic respiratory failure. In August 1991, the study group evolved into an academic society, becoming the Japan Society for Respiratory Care. Although the members were only physcians at the time, with medical development, the number of multidisciplinary members has gradually increased and now includes nurses, physical therapists, clinical laboratory technicians, etc. who are involved with respiratory care. Respiratory care for patients is no longer limited to just respiratory management, but now requires a holistic approach through multidisciplinary medical care as a team. With this background and in order for the Japan Society for Respiratory Care to further grow, we changed the name of the society to the Japan Society for Respiratory Care and Rehabilitation in 2006.
We had been operating as a voluntary group, but because we could only do so much as a voluntary group, a need for improvement was pointed out. Therefore, responding by reforming to a public interest corporation system became an urgent issue, so we proceeded with the work towards becoming a general incorporated association. On July 2, 2012, we transitioned to the "Japan Respiratory Care and Rehabilitation Society (general incorporated association)." The number of members is 4,177 as of August 2023.
The purpose of the Japan Respiratory Care and Rehabilitation Society is to make significant contributions to medical development related to respiratory care and respiratory rehabilitation through hosting academic meetings, publishing academic papers, studying, researching, and conducting educational activities, while continuing the project details we have built up.
This society is characterized by the fact that it is comprised of multidisciplinary members including clinical laboratory technicians, dentists, nurses, public health nurses, physical therapists, occupational therapists, clinical engineering technologists, dietitians, pharmacists, radiologic technologists, medical technologists, speech-language therapists, care workers, and other related medical practitioners, in addition to being able to provide a place where these members can interact each other. Moreover, by bringing together the expertise of different departments, it goes beyond in-house team medical care and provides medical care as a broad team that includes hospitals, clinics, home-visit nursing stations/home care nursing, and homemakers, contributing to improving the ADL and QOL of many patients who require respiratory care and respiratory rehabilitation. It is a society with great expectations for future advancement and development.
